If we did not have speech and language, little if anything would be known about the experience of dreaming. We would have to rely on behavioral observations of sleeping organisms such as, for instance, the sleeping hunting dog that vocalizes as it typically would if chasing game, or a sleeping infant crying out and showing the facial expression of fear. From verbal descriptions by people who report about their dreaming we know what dreams, and, for that matter, what unprotected emotions, are like.
But a bilateral lesion of this area in the monkey will leave its vocalization completely unimpaired. This profound functional difference is based on different anatomical projections. While in man there is a direct connection between the primary motor cortex and the laryngeal motoneuronsobviously a specific outgrowth of the pyramidal tract in both directionssuch a connection is lacking in the monkey. Thus man can exert a direct voluntary control over his vocal cords, but apes and monkeys cannot.
To cut a long story short, it appears that none of these intuitive criteria, which are accessible to us with a moment's reflection, can fully explain the phenomenon. 20 Massimo Piattelli-Palmarini The beginning of a satisfactory explanation has recently come from a comparison between the syntax of noun phrases in the Romance and in the German languages. Interesting asymmetries appear between different families of languages. This intriguing phenomenon has been found to be deeply related to other syntactic, heretofore distinct and prima facie unrelated, phenomena.
