Direct and continuous spectroscopic evaluation of cerebral oxygen saturation is possible (McCormick et al. 1991alb). These spectra are reducible to a qualitative measure of cerebral oxyhemoglobin, and such paradigms track qualitative changes in aggregate cerebral oxyhemoglobin and hemoglobin content of the cerebral vasculature over time. Quantitative measurement of cerebral oxyhemoglobin content from attenuation data requires that photon tissue path length be measured, but in situ measurement of photon path length for clinical monitoring is impractical at this time.
