If a metal surface is rubbed with the activated charcoal carried by a piece of cotton wool or cloth, the surface is quickly and completely cleaned from all the lightly adhering layers and films. The activated charcoal can be obtained by grinding a fresh respirator compound, or by grinding the drug "carbolen". e. it reduces coefficient of friction by introducing some lubricant. The cleaning of the surface of a solid from organic and other adsorbed films by means of direct contact with particles of activated charcoal occurs by the transfer of the molecules of adsorbed matter from the metal surface to the specks of charcoal dust.

The relative speed of the test piece and the wheel was 5*8 m/sec. A number of grooves, 2 mm apart had been cut into the spec imen surface by turning. Circular electrodes of constantan, platinum or nichrome wire, 0*3 mm diameter were pressed or soldered into the grooves and the free ends connected to a galvanometer G through a switch. The top end of the cylinder A was clamped in a special holder by a collet and also connected to the galvanometer. The load acted on the holder. A constant temperature increase could be observed as the surface of the test piece was ground off and the grinding interface approached junction 7.

Kostetskii. The author considers that with the increase of the sliding speed the nature of wear changes. At slow speeds wear is due to oxidising. This is followed by wear due to seizure, and then by seizure proper. This sequence is proved by the author's experiments on the friction of steel. Lubrication has a considerable effect on the processes of friction and seizure. A description is given of the author's experimental arrangement for the study of seizure in sliding at low speeds, and test results for various materials have been added.
