By C. S. Lewis
In 1941 England, whilst all desire was once threatened by way of the inhumanity of struggle, C. S. Lewis used to be invited to provide a sequence of radio lectures addressing the significant problems with Christianity. greater than part a century later, those talks proceed to maintain their poignancy. First heard as casual radio pronounces at the BBC, the lectures have been released as 3 books and consequently mixed as Mere Christianity. C. S. Lewis proves that "at the guts of every there's something, or a an individual, who opposed to all divergences of trust, all changes of temperament, all stories of mutual persecution, speaks with a similar voice," rejecting the limits that divide Christianity's many denominations. This 20th century masterpiece presents an unequaled chance for believers and nonbelievers alike to listen to a robust, rational case for the Christian religion.

But do not let us go too fast here. The Moral Law does not give us any grounds for thinking that God is ‘good’ in the sense of being indulgent, or soft, or sympathetic. There is nothing indulgent about the Moral Law. It is as hard as nails. It tells you to do the straight thing and it does not seem to care how painful, or dangerous, or difficult it is to do. If God is like the Moral Law, then He is not soft. It is no use, at this stage, saying that what you mean by a ‘good’ God is a God who can forgive.
Now I go on to the next big division. People who all believe in God can be divided according to the sort of God they believe in. There are two very different ideas on this subject. One of them is the idea that He is beyond good and evil. We humans call one thing good and another thing bad. But according to some people that is merely our human point of view. These people would say that the wiser you become the less you would want to call anything good or bad, and the more clearly you would see that everything is good in one way and bad in another, and that nothing could have been different.
But the standard that measures two things is something different from either. You are, in fact, comparing them both with some Real Morality, admitting that there is such a thing as a real Right, independent of what people think, and that some people’s ideas get nearer to that real Right than others. Or put it this way. If your moral ideas can be truer, and those of the Nazis less true, there must be something—some Real Morality—for them to be true about. The reason why your idea of New York can be truer or less true than mine is that New York is a real 13 mere christianity place, existing quite apart from what either of us thinks.
