From there they sailed on to Port Said and Alexandria, and their travels finally ended in the English port of Plymouth, in Devon. Initially, the War Ministry in London denied their application to serve in the RAF, but the Russian pilots persisted and, with the help of Air Vice-Marshal Sefton Brancker (then Controller-General of Personnel on the Air Council), they were ordered to report to the Central Flying School (CFS) at Upavon in Wiltshire. There, they underwent instruction on Avro 504Ks, Bristol F 2B Fighters and RAF SE 5as, and renewed their aerobatic skills.
The aircraft was camouflaged and flew at high speed. Yanchenko could not chase it down in his Nieuport 23, even with the throttle wide open and the fighter in a dive.
