After 100 AD, peaceful trade links with a Europe now under Roman rule were re-established, the Danish population increased after a period of decline, and small kingdoms existed. Denmark was able to defend itself against much of the large-scale migration occurring throughout Europe after the fall of Rome, but did experience a period of cultural decline with local tribal migration and invasions. The Danes had also spread their influence into northern Germany and parts of France. But the transfer of the capital of the Roman Empire from Rome to Constantinople, as well as the growing power of Germanic tribes to the south, forced Denmark once again to abandon southern trade routes in favour of eastwest trade to the Baltic, making sea-faring an even more important profession.
After a series of power struggles following Knud's death, the Danish empire eventually collapsed. Denmark itself became united under Svend Estridsen (104774), and the Vikings living in Denmark gradually decreased in number. The Vikings had brought Christianity back with them from western Europe, and for a time, Christianity and belief in the Norse gods coexisted in Denmark. Despite an early conversion by Harald Page xviii Bluetooth in 960, Christianity did not become firmly established until the reign of Svend Estridsen when regular dioceses were designated.
