What does the genetic diversity argument add to the core stereotype that human clones are copies? It inspires new stereotypes by associating duplicative “clones” with disease and death on a catastrophic scale.

We may react by outlawing cloning in an attempt to suppress the terrible “truth” about ourselves and our institutions. Denial may be a common and comforting psychological defense mechanism for some people. Nevertheless, when denial poses unreasonable risks to the welfare of other humans, we have a moral obligation to face reality. If we do not confront and rethink the false message that we have incorrectly derived from the science of cloning, we are likely to express fear and hostility toward those persons who, by virtue of their very existence, will take on the role of unwelcome messengers regarding our own putative lack of individuality and autonomy.
