On April 21, 1967, a small group of army colonels seized control of the Greek government in a military coup. They immediately suspended articles 32 / Chapter One of the constitution protecting human rights, dissolved political parties, and imprisoned, exiled, and tortured many of their left-wing opponents. After the disastrous Turkish invasion of Cyprus in July 1974, the junta collapsed, and Greece returned to civilian rule.

The power vacuum that remained after the German withdrawal from Greece in October 1944 was filled by a government of national unity that lacked both the legitimacy and the military power to rule effectively. Both right-wing and left-wing paramilitary units roamed the countryside seriously undermining the government’s efforts to regain control of the country. In December fighting broke out in Athens between ELAS, on the one hand, and the Greek police, British troops, and irregular right-wing bands, on the other.
