The basic teaching underlying every religion and every spiritual path is that it’s possible to experience fundamental happiness, but that this happiness comes from the inside; it cannot depend on our external life circumstances. Nor can it depend on simply feeling good emotionally. Many things can result in pleasurable or positive feelings, which we normally equate with being happy. But this is personal happiness, not the deeper sense of well-being that is not dependent on whether or not we feel good in the normal sense.

You can take a pause in time anytime—at work, while driving, during meals, and so on. For the duration of just three breaths, simply be present, refraining from engaging in the thinking mind. One particularly fruitful time to step outside of the thinking mind is while you’re taking a walk. If you focus some of your awareness on listening to the sounds around you or feeling your feet on the ground, you can more easily observe the mind without getting hooked by the thoughts. Try this when you have to walk a short distance—for example, when you’re doing an errand.

If you sincerely want to live a happier life, you might try this and verify for yourself what is possible. Why don’t we bring awareness to the beliefs of the thinking mind more often, since it’s so obvious that these beliefs block happiness? The answer is that the state of waking sleep—in which we’re not aware of what we’re thinking or feeling—is our default setting as human beings. As we observe ourselves with honesty, we’ll see the extent to which we’re lost in our thoughts and feelings, as well as in most of our activities.
