In the United States, President Richard Nixon was informed of the situation; King Hussein discussed what was happening with Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser, who clearly saw the complications of national security and the risks of being attacked by Israel, all of which were arising from the situation. Nasser agreed with King Hussein that in order to avoid Israeli intervention, Jordan would have to carry out a limited military operation alongside Egyptian political efforts to negotiate with the PFLP.

But once he had made up his mind about what he needed to do, he spoke with decisiveness and determination. I will never forget his words: “We will confront them. This is our chance to change the morale of the entire Arab world. We must prove that a small group can stand up to a giant. ” He made it clear to all of us that it was immaterial whether we won or lost, for what we were about to do was going to provide a historical turning point in our region. Some of the fighters disagreed with him and chose to withdraw to the hills, leaving us even more outnumbered, but we remained steadfast.
